The operator Jan Stenbeck built to needle the Swedish state telecom monopoly – and it worked.

Its roots are in Comvik, Kinnevik's mobile network from 1981, a private challenger to the state-owned Televerket long before anyone used the word deregulation. Tele2 was formed in 1993 and later merged with Comvik, whose mobile brand lives on as Comviq. The strategy was simple and loud: lower prices, brash advertising and a steady flow of complaints to regulators about the dominance of Televerket, later Telia.

Through the 1990s and 2000s it expanded across much of Europe and into Russia, then sold most of it off to focus on the Nordics and the Baltics. In 2018 it bought the cable operator Com Hem, turning Tele2 into a full-service operator with mobile, broadband and TV.
