swnet.*

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-05

The first Swedish Usenet hierarchy, where Swedish computer users argued in Swedish before se.* took over.

Usenet was American at heart, but regional hierarchies appeared early for discussions that concerned only one country, in that country's language — de.* in Germany, fj.* in Japan. In Sweden it was swnet.*, passed between universities and the handful of connected companies, first over UUCP and later across SUNET.

During the 1990s swnet.* gave way to se.*, which followed the country code and suited a world where internet access was spreading beyond academia. Old swnet groups are mostly interesting today as period documents: Swedish net culture from before it had a word for itself.
