Brothers Ryan and Chris Finley built SurveyMonkey in 1999, in the first web wave, as a self-service tool where anyone could throw together a questionnaire and collect responses without hiring a research firm. Dave Goldberg took over as CEO in 2009 and led the company to substantial growth until his sudden death in 2015. The IPO came in 2018.
