Log analytics as a cloud service, built by two ex-ArcSight engineers who reckoned Splunk should have been SaaS all along.

The founders came from security vendor ArcSight and had watched customers burn time running their own log platforms. Sumo Logic was cloud-native from day one: ship your logs there and query them from the browser, with no index servers of your own to size.

It ended up in the same squeezed middle as many rivals — pinned between Splunk above, Datadog coming in from observability, and cheap stacks built on Elasticsearch. After its 2020 IPO the share price slid steadily, and in 2023 Francisco Partners took it private for roughly $1.7 billion.
