- Power Analysis Attacks (2007, with Oswald and Popp)
Austrian whose Graz research group taught the world that a CPU gossips just as much as a smart card.
Mangard started out in hardware cryptography. Power Analysis Attacks: Revealing the Secrets of Smart Cards (2007), written with Elisabeth Oswald and Thomas Popp, became the standard text on pulling keys out of a chip's power draw — the technique Paul Kocher had published less than a decade earlier.
As a professor at TU Graz he built a group that carried the same mindset from smart cards to ordinary computers. It produced Rowhammer.js (2016), showing that Rowhammer could be triggered from JavaScript, and in 2018 Graz was one of the teams that independently found Meltdown and Spectre. His former students — Daniel Gruss and Michael Schwarz among them — have since turned microarchitectural attacks into a field of their own.
