Type
Query engine (SQL)

Commercial distribution of the Trino query engine, founded by its creators to query the data lake without moving the data.

Founded in 2017 by Justin Borgman together with Martin Traverso, Dain Sundstrom and David Phillips — the four who created Presto at Facebook and later forked it into Trino. Starburst sells an enterprise edition of Trino: a distributed SQL engine that queries data where it lives, whether in S3, Hadoop or an old database, without first loading everything into a warehouse. It is a counterweight to the "move it all into Snowflake" model. The cloud service is called Galaxy. Borgman had previously sold Hadapt to Teradata.
