Spod

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-06

Talker slang for someone who spends an unreasonable amount of time logged in — a label that was insult and honour in roughly equal measure.

The word comes from British schoolyard slang, where a spod is roughly a swot with no social life. On the British talkers that sprang up around 1990 it narrowed: the person who was always logged in, whatever the hour, whose telnet window never seemed to close.

Many talker codebases tracked total login time and had a command listing the top spods, so the label could be measured in hours. That turned it into something to compete for, and the word drifted from insult towards badge of honour — at least among those near the top of the list. Everyone else noted that a few thousand hours in a text window was an odd thing to boast about.
