Chris Hülsbeck's music program for the Commodore 64, published in 1986 as a type-in listing in the German magazine 64'er and one of the early ancestors of the tracker.
Readers typed the program in by hand from the magazine, which says something about both their patience and how badly they wanted to make music on the SID chip. In return they got a tool where music was entered as rows of notes in columns scrolling up the screen — the same basic layout that later became standard in Amiga trackers.
It came with a player routine that could be dropped into other programs, and it spread far beyond the magazine's readership. Soundmonitor wasn't the first music editor on the C64, but it was one of the first an ordinary teenager could actually get hold of.
