Sosemanuk

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-12

An eSTREAM stream cipher that borrowed from both SNOW and Serpent and quickly became one of the most admired candidates.

Sosemanuk was presented in 2005 by Berbain, Gilbert, Maximov and colleagues as part of the eSTREAM project. It combined an LFSR-based core in the style of SNOW 2.0 with an S-box from Serpent, and it was written to run fast in software on ordinary processors.

It reached the final eSTREAM software portfolio in 2008, a clear sign that stream ciphers still had a place even while block ciphers dominated.
