The Swedish company behind a good share of the one-time codes landing on your phone, even though almost nobody has heard of it.

Sinch was founded in Stockholm in 2008 as CLX Communications and built its business on A2P messaging: text messages sent by systems to people — login codes, delivery notices, appointment reminders. Rather than going through aggregators, it connected directly to carriers around the world. The name came in 2019, borrowed from a voice and video service that had been spun out of Rebtel.

After its 2015 listing, Sinch bought competitors at a brisk pace, including Pathwire in 2021, owner of the email service Mailgun. The result is one of the largest players in the same market as Twilio, with the same problem: the margin on a text message is thin, and the carriers know it.
