SHA-512

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-12

The 512-bit member of the SHA-2 family, built on 64-bit words.

SHA-512 is one of the hash functions in the SHA-2 family, specified by NIST and published in FIPS 180-2 in 2002. It works on 64-bit words, which makes it faster than SHA-256 on 64-bit processors when messages are long. The output is 512 bits, printed as 128 hexadecimal characters.

No practical collision attack on SHA-512 is known. Choosing between it and SHA-256 is usually a question of performance and output length rather than of any special property of the function itself.
