The Atlanta security firm that Dell bought, took public and eventually sold on to Sophos.
Secureworks began in Atlanta in 1999 and grew on monitoring as a service: customers let its analysts watch their logs and alerts around the clock instead of staffing a security operations centre of their own. Dell acquired it in 2011 and listed it on Nasdaq in 2016 while keeping a majority stake. Its Counter Threat Unit became known for reports on state-backed hacking groups, giving the company a threat intelligence profile bigger than its revenue.
Its own platform, Taegis, was an attempt to move from services to product in the XDR space, head to head with CrowdStrike. It wasn't enough to stand alone: in 2025 Secureworks was acquired by Sophos.
