Ryan Cleary

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-18

A British teenager whose botnet and IRC servers gave LulzSec its muscle, and whom the group itself called only "mildly associated".

Ryan Cleary of Essex was arrested in June 2011, aged 19, on suspicion of the denial-of-service attack on the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency. He ran IRC servers that LulzSec used and controlled a botnet of hijacked machines capable of flooding a site with traffic. A month earlier he had fallen out with Anonymous and leaked user details from their chat network, which did not make him more popular anywhere.

Alongside Jake Davis, Ryan Ackroyd and Mustafa Al-Bassam he pleaded guilty under the Computer Misuse Act, and in 2013 he received 32 months. The case made clear that renting out the infrastructure earns as much prison time as picking the targets.
