Known for
Hack-Tic, XS4ALL, the campaign against voting computers

Dutch hacker who helped start an ISP and talked his country out of voting by computer.

In the late 1980s Gonggrijp published the hacker magazine Hack-Tic and organised the Dutch hacker camps that became a tradition. The magazine's wish for its own internet connection led in 1993 to XS4ALL, one of the first providers where ordinary Dutch people could buy access. He later built the encrypted Cryptophone.

In 2006 he ran the campaign "Wij vertrouwen stemcomputers niet" (we don't trust voting computers). The group bought Nedap machines, swapped the software so they played chess, and showed that votes could be eavesdropped from a distance. The Netherlands went back to pencil and paper in 2008. He also volunteered for WikiLeaks, which is why US authorities demanded his Twitter records in 2010.
