Roman Seleznev

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-18

Russian card fraudster known as "Track2" who received one of the longest sentences ever handed down for computer crime in the US.

The son of a Russian Duma deputy, Seleznev infected point-of-sale systems — often at small American restaurants and pizzerias — with malware that harvested card data, then sold the numbers on carding forums. Millions of cards and well over $100 million in losses were attributed to him.

In 2014 the US Secret Service detained him in the Maldives and flew him to the United States, which Moscow called a kidnapping. He was convicted in Seattle in 2016 and sentenced to 27 years in 2017. In August 2024 he was released in a US–Russia prisoner exchange. The case made plain that the smallest merchants often run the worst-protected tills.
