The upstart that set out to build superconducting quantum computers in its own fab rather than wait for IBM and Google.

Chad Rigetti left IBM's quantum group and founded the company in Berkeley in 2013. It bet on superconducting qubits, the same approach as IBM and Google, but built its own chip fab in Fremont to avoid depending on anyone else's manufacturing. Rigetti also created the Quil instruction language and the pyQuil Python library, one of the early attempts to make quantum hardware programmable over the cloud.

Rigetti went public via SPAC in 2022, the same year its founder stepped down as CEO. Qubit counts have grown more slowly than promised, and the focus has shifted toward lower error rates rather than bigger chips.
