A low-code kit for the ugly internal admin panels every company needs but no developer wants to hand-write.

David Hsu started the company in 2017 in Y Combinator. The insight was that most internal tools — refunds, account moderation, inventory adjustments — are the same handful of components wired to a database or an API. Retool lets you build the interface by dragging tables, forms and buttons into place and binding them to SQL queries or REST calls, instead of spending a sprint on a CRUD page nobody outside the company will ever see.

The product caught on quickly among startups looking to save engineering time and was valued at around $3.2 billion in 2021.
