The graphics startup whose Vérité cards earned their own Quake port — and were then bought for the engineers.

Rendition was founded in 1993 and built something unusual: a programmable 3D card with a small RISC core underneath. The Vérité V1000 (1996) and V2200 competed with 3dfx Voodoo, Matrox and S3 Graphics. id Software even made a special "vQuake" build of Quake for the cards, which gave them street cred among PC gamers.

Performance still fell short of the Voodoo2, and in 1998 Rendition was bought by Micron Technology. The plan was a combined graphics-and-memory chip that never shipped, and the Vérité line fell silent.
