An open technology for uncompressed audio over IP networks, built for broadcasters rather than conference rooms.

Munich-based ALC NetworX unveiled RAVENNA in 2010. Unlike Dante it isn't a licensed chip but a description of how existing standards should be combined: RTP for the audio, IEEE 1588 PTP for the clock, ordinary IP mechanisms for finding and describing streams. Anyone may implement it, and it stretches to 384 kHz sample rates and DSD.

When AES67 was written in 2013 it borrowed so heavily from RAVENNA that RAVENNA effectively became a superset of the standard. As a result end users rarely see it — it lives inside consoles and routers at radio and TV stations, where nobody wants to be tied to a single vendor.
