The storage company that started in hard drives, handed them to a rival, and remade itself as the home of tape.
Founded in 1980. Through the 1990s Quantum was big in hard drives — the Fireball line sat in masses of PCs. In 2001 it sold the entire hard-drive business to Maxtor and bet on tape instead, where it already held DLT, a tape technology acquired from Digital in 1994.
Since then Quantum has lived in the world of backup and archive: tape libraries, later LTO cartridges, and file systems for large media archives. Less famous than the disk giants, but still there in the server room when something has to be set aside on tape for twenty years.
