The unlikely result of a thermostat maker and a British software startup pooling their quantum ambitions.
Quantinuum was formed in 2021 when Honeywell combined its Honeywell Quantum Solutions division with Cambridge Quantum Computing. Honeywell brought the hardware, machines built on trapped ions; Cambridge Quantum brought software, including the TKET compiler. Honeywell kept the majority stake.
The company's H-series has repeatedly set records for quantum volume, a benchmark that weighs both qubit count and error rates. Quantinuum has also been among the first to demonstrate logical qubits with lower error rates than the physical qubits they are built from — the step the whole field is waiting on.
