More info
Released
1997
Type
IRC network
Website
quakenet.org

The IRC network that began as a hangout for Quake players and grew into one of the largest anywhere.

Founded in 1997, when online Quake needed somewhere to arrange matches, find opponents and argue afterwards. Through the 2000s it became one of the biggest IRC networks in the world, centred on Europe and on gaming clans that each kept a channel of their own.

Channel registration is handled by the service bot Q, with the lighter L for small channels — QuakeNet's take on what other networks call ChanServ. User mode +x hides your hostname behind account.users.quakenet.org, which made it a good deal harder to DDoS whoever had just won the match.
