Punter protocol

Networking På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-03

The Commodore world's answer to XMODEM: a modem file transfer protocol that became the standard on C64 bulletin boards in the 1980s.

Canadian Steve Punter wrote it in the early 1980s for the Commodore PET and later brought it to the C64. Like XMODEM, it split files into checksummed blocks and resent whatever arrived damaged, but it fitted Commodore's own terminal software and character set, and it was free and built into almost everything.

The improved version was known as New Punter or C1, and Multi-Punter added batch transfers of several files per session. On a C64 board, a download effectively meant a Punter transfer, and anyone calling from a PC had to hunt for a client that spoke it. As users moved to PCs, ZMODEM took over.
