The company behind the OpenEdge fourth-generation language, which reached a much wider audience when its MOVEit file transfer product was breached in 2023.

Progress began in Massachusetts in 1981 as Data Language Corporation, building a database with its own fourth-generation language, Progress 4GL — today OpenEdge ABL. It became the foundation for thousands of business systems from small vendors, many of which are still running. Since the 2010s the company has grown mostly by buying mature products with loyal customers: Telerik, Ipswitch and Chef among them.

Ipswitch brought along MOVEit Transfer, a managed file transfer server. In May 2023 the Cl0p ransomware gang used a zero-day SQL injection to drain installations around the world. Thousands of organisations were hit, making it one of the largest data breaches of the year.
