Server line (x86)

Dell's server line since 1994 — the workhorse of countless server rooms, whether it stands in a rack, a tower or as a blade.

Dell launched PowerEdge in 1994 and over time built a full range of x86 servers in rack, tower and blade form factors. Remote management is handled by iDRAC (integrated Dell Remote Access Controller), a BMC that, via IPMI and Redfish, lets administrators power on, install and monitor a machine even when the operating system is down.

When Dell bought storage giant EMC for $67 billion in 2016 — one of the largest deals in tech history — PowerEdge became the server leg of the combined Dell Technologies, paired with EMC's storage systems. Model numbers like the R740 and R750 are recurring line items on data-centre purchase orders.
