Valve's first-person puzzle game from 2007, where you solve rooms by firing linked portals onto the walls.
Portal arrived in 2007, also in The Orange Box, on a simple but new idea: a gun that creates two linked holes in a room. Step into one, come out of the other — keeping your momentum. The mechanic came from the student game Narbacular Drop, whose team Valve hired wholesale.
More than the mechanic, the tone became famous: the passive-aggressive AI GLaDOS, the promise of cake ("the cake is a lie") and the Companion Cube turned into internet quotes far outside gaming circles. Portal 2 (2011) expanded everything with a co-op mode and still more dialogue, and the series stands as one of Valve's best-loved works.
