A firmware build tool and package manager that fetches the right cross-compiler, framework and libraries for a given board and builds the lot with one command.

Before PlatformIO, a new microcontroller project usually meant a vendor IDE, a hand-installed GCC release and libraries copied in by hand. PlatformIO, written in Python by Ukrainian developer Ivan Kravets, replaces that with a text file: platformio.ini names the board, the framework (Arduino, ESP-IDF, Zephyr, STM32Cube and others) and dependencies, and the tool fetches the rest at pinned versions.

The same project therefore builds identically on a laptop and in CI, which was unusual in embedded circles. Most people use it through the VS Code extension, which adds debugging over debug probes and a serial monitor. For many hobbyists it is the step after the Arduino IDE — same code, but with tooling that doesn't lie about which library version you have.
