The spin-off that gathered EMC's and VMware's loose open-source projects under one roof, went public, and was bought back six years later.

Pivotal was formed in 2013 by EMC and VMware, with Paul Maritz as CEO. The package included Spring, RabbitMQ, the Greenplum database, the Cloud Foundry platform and the consultancy Pivotal Labs, known for having developers pair-program all day, every day.

The flagship was an enterprise PaaS for companies that wanted Heroku's convenience in their own data centres. Pivotal went public in 2018, but Kubernetes soon made the Cloud Foundry model look like a detour. In 2019 VMware bought it back, and the remains became the Tanzu product line.
