- Fuzzing: Brute Force Vulnerability Discovery (2007)
The reverse engineer who packaged fuzzing into a framework anyone could download.
In the mid-2000s fuzzing was mostly hand-rolled scripts. Amini wrote the PaiMei reverse engineering framework, started the OpenRCE forum for people who read machine code for fun, and in 2007, with Aaron Portnoy, released Sulley — a Python framework where you described a protocol and got millions of malformed variants of it back. The same year brought the book Fuzzing: Brute Force Vulnerability Discovery, written with Michael Sutton and Adam Greene.
He led security research at TippingPoint, whose Zero Day Initiative bought zero-days from independent researchers rather than leave them to the black market. He later founded InQuest, which analyses malicious documents and files.
