Paulo Barreto
Brazilian cryptographer who designed Whirlpool with Vincent Rijmen and later gave the world the curves many zero-knowledge systems compute on.
Barreto spent many years at the Universidade de São Paulo. In 2000 he and Rijmen wrote the Whirlpool hash function and the Anubis and Khazad block ciphers, all built on the same ideas as AES and submitted to the European NESSIE project. Whirlpool was selected and became an ISO standard, but never caught on much beyond cryptographers.
His most widely used work may be the Barreto–Naehrig curves from 2005, with Michael Naehrig. They are elliptic curves built for efficient pairings, and one of them underpins zk-SNARK verification on Ethereum. He has since worked on post-quantum cryptography.
