Packet loss

Networking På svenska → Updated: 2026-05-23

When packets disappear in transit — TCP retransmits, UDP doesn't.

Good: <0.1%. Noticeable: 1-3%. Destroys: >5%. Causes: overloaded network, bad fibre, faulty switch, Wi-Fi interference. The effect on TCP throughput is dramatic (TCP backs off exponentially on loss). VoIP/gaming suffer most.
