The cloud-security firm that turned "agentless" into a sales pitch — reading an entire cloud account from snapshots instead of installing anything.

Founded in 2019 in Tel Aviv by Avi Shua and Gil Geron, both Check Point alumni. The idea was SideScanning: rather than an agent per server, the platform reads read-only snapshots of the disks through the cloud provider's storage layer and assembles a full picture of vulnerabilities, misconfigurations and exposed secrets. Coverage arrived in minutes with no runtime overhead — and it helped kick off the category that came to be called CNAPP.

Orca became a unicorn fast and ended up in open warfare with Wiz, founded a year later with a near-identical pitch; the two have traded lawsuits over patents and over who did it first. The fight for agentless cloud security now runs between them, Lacework and the agent-based incumbents.
