The counterpart to Linux remoteproc and RPMsg for the side that doesn't run Linux, so an RTOS or bare-metal program can speak the same protocol.

The Linux kernel has RPMsg built in, but the auxiliary core has no kernel to borrow code from. OpenAMP fills that gap with a standalone C library implementing the virtio queues, the endpoints and the resource table that remoteproc reads when it loads firmware. Underneath sits libmetal, a thin layer that hides the differences between FreeRTOS, Zephyr, bare metal and Linux userspace as far as interrupts, shared memory and locks are concerned.

Xilinx and Mentor Graphics drove the project initially, and it moved under Linaro as a community project in 2019. It is the default route to AMP on chips from Xilinx, ST and NXP among others, which means the vendor examples work on day one and the trouble starts when someone edits the memory map.
