A cloud login service that spent a decade chasing Okta before being swallowed by another identity vendor.

Danish brothers Thomas and Christian Pedersen founded OneLogin in San Francisco in 2009, around the same time as Okta. The pitch was identical: one portal where employees sign in once and reach every cloud app through SSO and SAML, with directory sync, MFA and automatic offboarding thrown in. The company also published open-source SAML toolkits for several languages, which plenty of developers have used without knowing where they came from.

In May 2017 an attacker got hold of the company's AWS keys and, by OneLogin's own account, could read and decrypt customer data in its US region. For a business whose entire job is looking after other people's keys, it was an unfortunate kind of publicity. In 2021 it was acquired by One Identity, part of Quest Software.
