Newsfeed (Usenet)
The arrangement between two Usenet servers about which groups they pass to each other — the thing that held together a network with no centre.
Usenet had no central server. Each site had a handful of neighbours, and every new article went to every neighbour not already listed in its Path line. Which groups went where was set in a config file: sys in B News, newsfeeds in INN. Small sites took a feed from a single upstream; big sites exchanged a full feed with many.
Getting a feed was a social negotiation more than a technical one. You asked an admin nearby, and whoever paid the phone bill decided what came along. When the binary groups ballooned in the 1990s, a full feed became something only a few could carry, and the feed turned into a service you bought.
