The name McAfee went by for seven years after merging with Network General, and under which it bought both PGP and Dr Solomon's.

In December 1997 McAfee Associates merged with Network General, maker of the Sniffer network analyser. The combined company was called Network Associates and was meant to be a one-stop shop for security and network monitoring. Just before the merger McAfee had bought Phil Zimmermann's PGP Inc, and 1998 added Britain's Dr Solomon's, Alan Solomon's antivirus firm, plus Trusted Information Systems.

The whole never amounted to more than the sum of its parts. PGP was sold off in 2002 without ever finding a place in the line-up, and in 2004 Network Associates sold the Sniffer business too and went back to the McAfee name — the one customers had been using all along.
