Msged

På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-06

A free FidoNet message editor that let sysops and points read and write netmail and echomail straight from the node's message base.

A FidoNet node had software to dial out and sort the mail, but it still needed something to read it with. Msged, originally written by Jim Nutt around 1990 and released into the public domain, filled that gap: a text-mode editor that opened the message base, showed the threads in each echo and let you reply with the right quoting, addresses and control lines.

Others took over the code and ported it, and it eventually ran on DOS, OS/2, Windows and Unix with support for several base formats, including Squish and JAM. Its rival GoldED had more features and more colours; Msged was what you picked when you wanted something small that simply worked.
