- Meltdown (first author), Platypus
First author of the Meltdown paper, and one of the Graz group that for a few years taught chipmakers to dread January.
As a PhD student under Daniel Gruss at TU Graz, Lipp was part of the disclosure of Meltdown and Spectre in January 2018. Meltdown let an ordinary program read kernel memory by having the CPU speculate past the permission check and then reading the traces left in the cache. Every major OS vendor had to rework how the kernel is mapped.
Before that he had brought cache attacks to phones with ARMageddon (2016); afterwards he led Platypus (2020), which pulled keys out of Intel's software-readable energy counters — power analysis without an oscilloscope.
