Money mule
Someone who lets criminals use their bank account to receive stolen money and pass it on.
Phishing, BEC and similar scams land money in an account that can be traced, so the fraudster wants a buffer: someone whose account receives the funds, withdraws them as cash or forwards them, often into crypto, and keeps a small cut. Mules are recruited on social media with ads promising "easy money from home" or fake jobs as a "payment processing agent". Many are young, and some genuinely don't understand what they've signed up for.
Ignorance is a weak defence. The account gets frozen, and in most countries the mule can be prosecuted for money laundering. Europol has coordinated an annual crackdown called EMMA since 2016. Instant payments have made mules more valuable, because the money is several hops away before anyone notices it has gone.
