The Maryland company where flight simulators and Civilization came out of the same office.
Programmer Sid Meier and former fighter pilot Bill Stealey founded the company in 1982, supposedly after a bet over who was better at an arcade flying game. Stealey sold, Meier wrote the code. Early titles such as F-15 Strike Eagle (1984) and the submarine game Silent Service made MicroProse the simulation publisher. Not to be confused with MicroPro, the WordStar people.
Meier then drifted into strategy: Pirates! (1987), Railroad Tycoon (1990) and Civilization (1991), the game that turned "one more turn" into a sleep disorder. The label also published X-COM (1994). After the merger with Spectrum HoloByte, Meier left in 1996 to found Firaxis, and Hasbro bought what remained in 1998.
