Hardware designer who made radio security something you can research on a gadget budget.
Through Great Scott Gadgets he has shipped open hardware for radio: Ubertooth One for sniffing Bluetooth, and HackRF One (Kickstarter, 2014), a software-defined radio that transmits and receives from roughly 1 MHz to 6 GHz. Before HackRF, comparable lab gear cost tens of thousands of dollars.
The effect shows up in conference programmes: attacks on car keys, garage doors, pagers and GSM went from specialist territory to weekend projects. Having everything open – schematics, firmware, board layouts – is part of the point.
