The company that wanted to turn the whole datacenter into one computer with Apache Mesos, and lost the orchestration war to Kubernetes.
Ben Hindman co-created the Mesos cluster manager at UC Berkeley, and Twitter ran it at scale. In 2013 he founded Mesosphere with Florian Leibert and Tobias Knaup to sell the idea to everyone else. The Marathon scheduler and the DC/OS platform, open-sourced in 2016, promised to run containers, Spark jobs and databases side by side on the same fleet of machines.
The trouble was that Kubernetes promised much the same thing, had Google behind it and won the developers. In 2019 Mesosphere renamed itself D2iQ and pivoted to Kubernetes. It wasn't enough: operations wound down in 2023, and Nutanix picked up the product and part of the team.
