Welsh hacker known as Kuji, cast as the mastermind behind the 1994 break-ins at the US Air Force's Rome Laboratory.
When the Air Force traced the intrusions at Rome Laboratory in upstate New York, investigators found two handles: Datastream Cowboy and Kuji. The first turned out to be a London teenager. The second, whom investigators took for a more sophisticated mentor, was Bevan in Cardiff. He was arrested in 1996, and US Senate hearings presented the case as one of the most serious threats military networks had yet faced.
The charges were dropped in 1997 without a trial, for lack of evidence. Bevan has said he was looking for proof of a government UFO cover-up, the same motive Gary McKinnon gave a few years later. He went on to become a security consultant, which is the customary second act in stories like this.
