Locks, Safes and Security; Open in Thirty Seconds (2008)

American lawyer and lock expert who treats mechanical locks like any other piece of vulnerable software.

Tobias wrote Locks, Safes and Security, a standard reference for police and locksmiths. Hacker circles got to know him when he and his colleagues showed at DEF CON how Medeco's high-security cylinders, certified and installed across US government buildings, could be opened in seconds. The work was collected in Open in Thirty Seconds (2008).

The response followed a familiar script: the manufacturer denied it, customers fretted, and eventually a revised product shipped. Tobias's argument is that physical security deserves the same responsible-disclosure culture as software, because a certification that has never faced an attacker is mostly a promise.
