Loyd Blankenship
The Mentor — wrote the hacker manifesto in 1986 and, four years later, the role-playing book that sent the Secret Service through his employer's door.
A Legion of Doom member, Blankenship wrote "The Conscience of a Hacker" shortly after an arrest. It ran in Phrack issue 7 in January 1986 and became the scene's creed: the bored, gifted teenager against an adult world that doesn't get him.
He went on to Steve Jackson Games in Austin and wrote GURPS Cyberpunk. In March 1990 the Secret Service raided the publisher and carted off computers and manuscripts, as if a game supplement were a manual for computer crime. The company won Steve Jackson Games v. Secret Service, and the affair helped prompt the founding of the Electronic Frontier Foundation that same year. Few game designers can claim to have accidentally created a civil-liberties organisation.
