Known for
Refined power analysis, UOV

French cryptographer who works both sides of the same chip: multivariate signature schemes, and attacks that read the key out of the power draw.

In 1999 he and Jacques Patarin published the "duplication method", one of the first systematic countermeasures against differential power analysis on DES. In 2003 came the other side: "refined power analysis", in which the attacker picks points on an elliptic curve that produce a zero coordinate mid-computation. Randomising the scalar doesn't help, because zero stays zero.

Back in 1999, the year of the duplication method, he, Aviad Kipnis and Patarin introduced Unbalanced Oil and Vinegar, the signature scheme that now underpins several candidates in NIST's post-quantum process.
