Apple's DAW, descended from an Atari ST sequencer by Germany's C-Lab and now the default recording environment on the Mac.
Gerhard Lengeling and Chris Adam wrote Notator for the Atari ST in the late 1980s. Its successor, Notator Logic, arrived in 1993 from their new company Emagic and for a while ran on both Mac and Windows. Apple bought Emagic in 2002 and killed the Windows version the same year — a decision that handed Cubase, and later FL Studio, an entire generation of PC users.
Under Apple, Logic got cheaper rather than dearer: Logic Pro X launched in 2013 for a fraction of the earlier price. Its audio engine is shared with the free GarageBand, so a project can grow from a phone sketch into a studio session without an export step. Plugins load as Audio Units, never as VST.
