Llama Community License

AI & ML På svenska → Updated: 2026-11-01

Meta's licence for the Llama weights: free for almost everyone, with conditions that keep it from being open source whatever the press releases say.

It arrived with Llama 2 in July 2023 and has carried over to every release since. The best-known clause is about size: any service with more than 700 million monthly active users when the model was released has to ask Meta for a separate licence. In practice that threshold catches a handful of competitors. An acceptable use policy comes attached as well, and from Llama 3 onwards derived models must have names starting with "Llama" and products must display "Built with Llama".

The OSI has said explicitly that the licence isn't open source, since it discriminates against users and fields of use. For Llama 3.2's vision models, individuals and companies domiciled in the EU were excluded on top of that, which is hard to square with the word "community".
