Open-source infrastructure for real-time video and audio, built on top of WebRTC.

LiveKit was founded in 2021 by Russ d'Sa and David Zhao and ships a WebRTC SFU (selective forwarding unit) under Apache 2.0, plus a paid cloud offering. An SFU relays streams between participants so a call can scale well past what raw peer-to-peer can handle.

The project got a major boost in 2024 when OpenAI used it for ChatGPT's voice mode. Unlike Agora, which is fully proprietary, you can self-host LiveKit on your own hardware.
