Known for
CKKS, HEaaN

South Korean cryptographer, the first C in CKKS: the homomorphic scheme that accepts approximate answers and became useful for machine learning because of it.

The early homomorphic schemes that followed Craig Gentry's breakthrough computed exactly over integers, which is pointlessly precise when the inputs are neural-network weights. In 2017 Cheon, Andrey Kim, Miran Kim and Yongsoo Song published CKKS, which treats encryption noise and rounding error as the same thing. Suddenly encrypted real numbers could be multiplied thousands of times while losing no more precision than ordinary floating point.

Cheon is a professor at Seoul National University and founded CryptoLab, which develops the HEaaN library. CKKS now ships in most major FHE libraries and is the default choice whenever someone wants to run a model on data they are not allowed to see.
